BEKA BR385 Intrinsically Safe Alarm Sounder

The BR385 is a third generation intrinsically safe field mounting sounder. It produces a loud audible warning signal in a hazardous area and has forty-nine different first stage alarm sounds selectable by internal switches. Each first stage tone can be changed to a second or a third stage alarm sound by an external contact which may be in the safe or hazardous area. Selectable outputs include DIN, NFS, PFEER, Australian and Singaporean defined warning, alert and evacuation tones.

The BR385 sounder can be used with the BA386 beacon to form a combined audio visual alarm in which the sounder may be silenced for a predetermined time by an external ‘alarm accept’ contact, but may only be used for ATEX systems. The BA386 beacon includes terminals to power the sounder, and for an external push button to silence the sounder. The silence time is adjustable from 1 to 30 minutes. A free combining kit to join the two units is an available option when ordering the BR385 and BA386 on the same order.

IS Isolator Recommendations

BR385 Sounder alone IS Isolator Recommendations

Option 1 – Single Sounder Installation: The BR385 Sounder requires a single intrinsic safety barrier with safety/entity parameters not exceeding the following values: Uo/Voc=28V, Io/Isc=93mA, Po/Po=660mW

Suitable Barrier: GMI D1048S /D1049S / D5048S / D5049S using output “C” terminals in each case.

Option 2 – Multiple Sounders, Use of Multi-Channel Barrier for Economy:

Suitable Barrier: GMI D1042Q (quad channel) with each output separately powering an individual BR385 sounder.

Note that while each sounder has its own dedicated barrier channel, a complete failure of the barrier module will affect all alarm notifications associated with it.

Sounder and Beacon IS Isolator Recommendations

Option 1 – Mutual Two-Wire Connection: The BA386 Beacon & BR385 Sounder Combination may be powered from a single intrinsic safety barrier providing 16VDC @ 35mA and with safety/entity parameters not exceeding the following values: Uo/Voc=28V, Io/Isc=93mA, Po/Po=660mW.

Suitable Barriers: P&F KFDO-SD2-Ex1.1045; MTL5025

Note that failure of the single barrier will negate both alarm notification modes.

Option 2 – High Integrity Four-Wire Connection, Beacon and Sounder Powered Separately:
The BA386 Beacon requires a single intrinsic safety barrier with safety/entity parameters not exceeding the following values: Uo/Voc=32V, Io/Isc=110mA, Po/Po=800mW.

Suitable Barrier: GMI D1048S /D1049S / D5048S / D5049S using output “B” terminals in each case.
The BR385 Sounder requires a single intrinsic safety barrier with safety/entity parameters not exceeding the following values: Uo/Voc=28V, Io/Isc=93mA, Po/Po=660mW. Suitable barrier: GMI D1048S / D1049S /D5048S / D5049S using output “C” terminals in each case.

Note that the failure of one barrier will leave the other alarm notification mode working.

Option 3 – Multiple Beacon & Sounder Combos, Use of Multi-Channel Barrier for Economy:

Suitable Barrier: GMI D1042Q (quad channel) with each output separately powering either a beacon or a sounder. Under no circumstances may two barrier channel outputs be connected in parallel to power one beacon-sounder combination.

Note that while each beacon and sounder has its own dedicated barrier channel, a complete failure of the barrier module will negate all alarm notifications associated with it.
